Drug Uses
Propecia (Finasteride) is used to treat hair loss in males. Propecia targets loss on the top and middle front of the head. It is not proven whether it is also effective in treating receding hairlines. This is to be used for males only. Women and especially children, cannot use Propecia.
How Taken
Propecia comes in tablet form, and is taken orally once a day unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor. It is to be taken on an empty stomach, and one must never go beyond the prescribed dosage. As one must never self-medicate, you also should not begin and end treatments without first consulting your doctor.
Warnings/Precautions
Prior to taking Propecia, make sure that you first undergo a medical checkup and consultation with your doctor. Someone who has liver disease cannot take this medicine. It has already been stated above that Propecia is only for males, so it goes without saying that it cannot be taken by pregnant and lactating women. It is also advisable that pregnant women not come in contact with this medicine in its crushed form, as Propecia can have adverse effects on male babies.
Missed Dose
It would be pretty pointless to go on any treatment only to have it not work for you because you keep on forgetting to take the required medicine, and more so because Propecia is to be taken only once a day. Set an alarm or have someone remind you, but make sure that you do not forget to take your recommended dose. If this should happen, just let it pass and take one the next day, but do not take two doses the next day to make up for the one you missed.
Possible Side Effects
If you should have any allergic reactions to the medicine – such as shortness of breath swelling of the face, lips and tongue, stop taking it immediately. Get emergency medical help and do not let the allergy spread than they already have. Other side effects have been noted, and you should make sure to notify your doctor. Some of these less serious side effects are a decrease in sex drive, impotence, changes in breast size or tenderness, and a decrease in the amount of ejaculate. Do not start or stop medical treatments without consulting your doctor first. Much as you want to treat your hair loss, your health should still come first. Make sure that your treatment is always monitored.
Storage
Propecia should be stored at room temperature, in a tightly sealed container where no moisture can seep into it.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, or if you should suspect that there is one, do not hesitate to head over to the hospital or get emergency medical help. This is especially important because it has not yet been established what the symptoms for an overdose are.
