Drug Uses

Viagra (Sildenafil) is used to treat impotence in men. It increases the body’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation and intercourse. It does not protect you, however, from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV.

Dosage and Intake

Viagra is taken orally as needed, ideally one tablet at least an hour before sexual activity, although it can also be taken from four hours to thirty minutes before sexual activity. It should not be taken more than once a day; the use of more or less of Viagra should be consistent with your doctor’s prescription.

Precautions on Use

Before taking Viagra, be sure to consult your doctor and inform him of your past and present medical conditions. Make sure to tell him if you have had a heart attack or a stroke before, or life-threatening irregular heartbeat condition within the last six months, if you have a history of heart failure or have coronary artery disease. If you have angina, high or low blood pressure, liver problem, kidney problem, or blood constitution disorder, tell your doctor about these conditions. Other conditions you especially have to watch out for and tell your doctor accordingly prior to Viagra use include: sickle cell anemia or leukemia, bleeding disorder, stomach ulcer, retinitis pigmentosa. Even a physical penile deformity is worthy of your doctor’s attention first before you embark on the use of this drug.

If any of these pre-existing conditions are present, you may not be able to take Viagra, or you may be required to adjust the dosage you take under strict monitoring of your physician. If you are over 65 years of age, the likelihood of side effects from Viagra increases multifold, and your doctor may have to prescribe lower dosages of the drug if you still wish to take it. Viagra is not for women, although it poses no harm to pregnant women and their unborn.

Missed dose

Unless you are very sexually active and engage in the activity at extraordinary frequency and vigor, you are normally within the regular dose prescribed in the use of Viagra. As it is taken as needed, you are not about to miss a dose.

Possible side effects

Taken in moderation and under expert advice, side effects on the use of Viagra are unlikely. However, they cannot be totally ruled out. Viagra’s side effects are usually mild to moderate and last no longer than a few hours, and occur only when the drug is taken in high dosages. The most common (and usually not serious) side effects of Viagra are stomach cramps, headache, dizziness and facial flush. Other side effects (and usually rare) include temporary color blindness, increased eye sensitivity to light, blurred vision. An even rarer occurrence, there have been reports of erections induced by Viagra that last for hours. You need to see a doctor immediately if your erection lasts for more than four hours. Without immediate medical attention, permanent penile damage can not be discounted.

There have been few reports of heart attacks and strokes, irregular heartbeats, and even deaths occurring in men taking Viagra. If ever, most of the sufferers have had heart problems even before taking the drug. A more in-depth medical examination and medical history evaluation are needed to concretely establish any link to the use of Viagra and the aforementioned conditions.

Storage

Keep Viagra out of reach of children. Store in original containers tightly closed at room temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Farenheit). Excursions are permitted at 15 to 30 degrees Celsius (59 to 86 degrees Farenheit).

Overdose

If you experience any of the following: chest pain, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, a swelling of the ankle or legs, you may have had an overdose. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.

More information

Don’t take Viagra if you are under any medication containing nitrates. Nitrates are usually present in recreational drugs or in many prescription medicines used to treat angina. Combining Viagra with nitrates may cause irregular blood pressure inducing dizziness or fainting spells, even a heart attack or stroke. Remember that Viagra is only for erectile dysfunction. It is not meant for infants, children, or women. Never let anybody else use your Viagra, don’t prescribe them to your friends. The drug must only be used under a doctor’s prescription.
